However, no one could’ve expected what was about to unfold, as a routine traffic stop escalated to the discharging of weapons as the suspect and authorities exchanged fire.

A Gainesville police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorist who was driving a vehicle that matched the description of a suspect vehicle.

The suspect exited the vehicle with a sidearm, charging and shooting at the officer, who returned fire. Two more officers arrived at the scene, and the suspect began firing at them, with both officers returning fire. One of the officers shot the suspect, who attempted to flee, but fell to the ground.

Gainesville PD Public Information Officer Art Forgey has confirmed that two officers with the Gainesville Police Department sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of this incident.

A body was found after the incident in close proximity, at a local business, with the victim having died as the result of a gunshot wound.

Numerous Gainesville Police Department officers and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies are on scene in the 1300 block of E. University Ave. in regard to an active and ongoing investigation. ASO Deputies are assisting the Gainesville PD. They have confirmed there is no active threat to the public.
