OCALA, FL (352today.com) – On a night when most people are easing into the workweek, a different kind of Monday routine unfolds in downtown Ocala. Inside the pirate-themed walls of Mutiny–complete with nautical decor and a cozy bar setup–the only things sharper than a cutlass are the punchlines.

Each Monday, Brick City Comedy hosts “Brick City Comedy Presents: After Dark,” a weekly 21-and-older open mic that has built a loyal following. Signups begin at 8:30 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m., offering comics of all experience levels a chance to test material in front of a live crowd.

The night is organized by Brick City Comedy founders Daniel Bennett and Javier Gonzalez. Bennett, who also works behind the bar at Mutiny on Mondays, performs a short set each week. He recently opened for touring comedian T.J. Miller at the Marion Theatre.

Hosts rotate weekly from within the group, the most recent being Adam Johns–self-labeled as “The Blind Guy”–who led the March 2 show. Johns, who has worked with Brick City Comedy for about two years, introduced a lineup that ultimately featured 22 comedians.

Among those taking the stage were Lee, Brandon Heap, A-A Ron the Comedian, Ms. Bubbles, Clifton Harris, Bennett performing as “Dan the Bartender,” Jake Donaldson, Lisa Puckett, Spencer Achreid and Claire Johns.

Organizers say the goal is to provide a consistent stage for local comics while also bringing in fresh voices from outside the area. The open mic has hosted seasoned performers and first-timers alike, creating a mix of styles and experience levels each week.

By the end of the night, the pirate-themed bar felt less like a weekday watering hole and more like a comedy club at sea, with laughter echoing off the walls and a crowd willing to stay out a little later for one more joke. In a town where weekends usually get the spotlight, Brick City Comedy has found a way to make Mondays something worth cheering for.
