MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Now that the storms have cleared, property owners can assess any damage sustained from Hurricane Milton.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has offered the following tips to document and report any storm-related issues:

  • Document damage: Take clear, detailed photos of any damage.
  • Make emergency repairs: Secure your property by covering broken windows and damaged roofs.
  • Seek safe lodging: If your home is uninhabitable, find safe accommodations.

To report property damage to the Marion County Property Appraiser:

  • Submit a report online at the property’s appraiser’s website
  • Call the Marion County Property Appraiser’s office at 352-368-8300
  • Email damageassessment@pa.marion.fl.us
  • Download the Marion County PA app on a smartphone (fastest method)

Even after reporting damage to the appraiser, MCSO reminds you not to forget to contact your homeowner’s insurance company or landlord to initiate claims.

Tips for photographing property damage:

  1. Safety first: Avoid hazardous areas (downed wires, unstable debris) before taking photos.
  2. Be specific: Focus on individual damage like broken windows, roof issues, or structural damage.
  3. Use proper lighting: Utilize natural light or a flashlight for clear images.
  4. Avoid blurry photos: Hold the camera steady for clarity.
  5. Provide context: Take multiple angles and include undamaged areas for comparison.
