MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Marion County is recognizing Waste and Recycling Workers Week from June 15-20, honoring the men and women who collect, transport and process the county’s waste and recyclable materials.

County officials said waste and recycling workers play a critical role in protecting public health, preserving natural resources and maintaining the quality of life enjoyed by residents throughout Marion County. Their work is often performed in difficult conditions, including extreme weather and potentially hazardous environments. According to the county, waste and recycling collection is considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the nation due to risks associated with traffic, heavy equipment and other workplace hazards.

In addition to keeping neighborhoods clean, waste and recycling professionals help reduce pollution, support environmental sustainability efforts and ensure communities remain healthy places to live and work. The Marion County Board of County Commissioners is encouraging residents to take time during the week the thank waste and recycling workers for their service. Officials also reminded motorists to slow down and use extra caution when driving near collection vehicles to help keep workers safe on the job.

More information about Marion County’s Solid Waste Department and its programs is available on the Marion County Government website.
