LADY LAKE, FL (352today.com) – A driver was arrested Sunday after Lady Lake police said he was caught traveling 95 mph in a 40-mph zone, one of the first local cases to fall under Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law.
According to an arrest report, Officer J. Burns was conducting traffic enforcement on CR 466 near Clay Avenue around noon Sunday, May 31, 2026, when he observed a black Ford Mustang traveling eastbound at what appeared to be an excessive speed.
Using radar, Burns recorded the vehicle traveling 95 mph in a posted 40 mph zone – 55 mph over the speed limit. The vehicle was stopped near the intersection of Clay Avenue and CR 466.
Police identified the driver a David Estevan Quiroga-Salazar, 20, of Clover, South Carolina. According to the report, the driver was immediately taken into custody because officers believed he was operating the vehicle in a willful and wanton manner that endangered himself, his four passengers and other motorists.
The arrest report states the roadway was still wet from an earlier rain shower and that the vehicle was traveling over a small hill, limiting visibility and reducing the driver’s ability to react to potential hazards.
Quiroga-Salazar was charged with reckless driving and issued a criminal citation for dangerous speed under Florida’s recently enacted “Super Speeder” law. The law allows criminal penalties for drivers caught traveling 50 mph or more above the posted speed limit or driving at 100 mph or more in a manner that endangers others.
According to the report, Quiroga-Salazar acknowledged his speed after the stop and told the officer his radar detector never sounded. He also reportedly said he had given in to “peer pressure” from passengers who wanted to see what the car could do.
Under Florida’s new law, a first offense can carry a mandatory court appearance, fines and up to 30 days in jail.
